Artist Notes | #002: Graphic Tablet Worries & Woes

Artist Notes | #002: Funny Illustration of Tara Fisher Jones dealing with malfunctioning graphics tablet.

I made up my mind years ago that my medium would be digital art. I went a little overboard with supplies—new, secondhand, you name it—and ended up drowning in clutter. I had to give away so many things that could’ve been used, and honestly, I’m convinced my brain is on a slight tilt when it comes to technology. For the life of me, I could never figure out how to get my carefully hand-drawn illustrations scanned and ready for software.

Naturally, seeing my human-made mistakes—uneven lines, wonky colors—made me recoil. I started hating my own artwork. And this has been my pattern since 2005: draw on paper, scan it, and wrestle with every software I could get my hands on to bring it to life. It wasn’t until I got a Wacom 12WX and Clip Studio Paint EX that everything finally clicked. Total gamechanger.

BUT… I’ve already burned through a few Wacom tablets. My current model, the Cintiq 2, is holding me hostage until I can replace her with something newer. My poor tablet has a screen full of scratches, a fan so loud it fries my brain, and Windows updates that just…don’t happen. I’m over it.

And now? My brain is glitching daily because I just found out Wacom discontinued the Mobilestudio models. I scoured Reddit, asked AI a thousand questions, and my heart sank. I knew these tablets were pricey—even secondhand—but I refuse to give up. Honestly, I also REFUSE to use an iPad or any non-Wacom tablet. Yes, I’m biased. Ugh.

I love the physical buttons, the solid screen, and the feeling of control that older Wacom's give me. Wish me luck—hopefully, my Cintiq holds it together until I can finally upgrade.

So far these are some of possible replacements that I have been looking at via Amazon:
